Connecting your PC or MAC to the Campus Wired Network
Getting Connected
How do I connect my personal PC to the network on campus?
Requirements:
You must be running a minimum of a Pentium class system with at least 64 MB RAM
Windows 98/NT/ME/2000/XP
Network Adapter (compatible with Windows 98/NT/ME/2000/XP)
Patch cable (RJ45) otherwise know as 10BaseT (this will connect from the network adapter to the data jack on the wall)
Overview:
Access to the campus computer network is via DHCP only. This means each time you start your computer you will be automatically given an IP address that will get you on the network. Static IP addresses are not permitted on the network as a security measure. Your Windows operating system should have everything you need to get connected:
- Install the Ethernet card into your system (see the manual that came with it) Windows should recognize the card when you boot up and install the software for it or you will be asked to insert the manufactures software diskette.
- Once the card is installed, select and double click go to "My Computer "
- Select and double click "Control Panel"
- You must add the TCP/IP protocol to the network (Ethernet) card. To do this select Network under Control Panel.
- After selecting Network, Highlight your Ethernet Adapter as shown on the diagram below. Next click the Add Button
- At the Select Network Component Type menu select Protocol, then click the Add button
- At the Select Network Protocol menu Select Microsoft on the left side of the menu, then select TCP/IP on the right side of the menu. Once you have selected both correct options click on the OK button
- Go Back and to Network as in step This time select the newly added TCP/IP protocol associated with your ethernet adapter, then Select Properties
- The first screen that comes up under Properties should be set as follows. Obtain an IP address automatically must be selected. Next select DNS Configuration.
- The DNS should be disabled. All DNS and other important setting will be obtained from the college server.
