Students developed larger site strategies for the entire block that includes the identification of building sites for each facility as well as landscape strategies for stitching together the functions of Ujamaa square. While examining the site and identifying possible building sites, you should consider the reuse and transformation of the existing structures on the site, particularly the two Head Start buildings and the freshly gutted house. This house in particular should be thought of as a first-phase structure. It could contain the reception and phase one activities for the environmental center or the childcare center or a secondary program. All other buildings will maintain their present uses (community center, elderly housing, caretaker’s residence, and shrine). While building sites are limited to the areas on the north half of Ujamaa Square, the landscape for the entire block may be transformed. |
