What is STEM?
STEM is an acronym for the four subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. These subjects encompass both the academic and professional fields, and include careers ranging from electrical engineering to computer programming to mechanical design, and everything in between.

The STEM subjects have always been the most complex, cutting edge, and continuously expanding fields.  STEM subjects are the foundation of much of the innovation and invention that we constantly benefit from today. Technology and science is continuously and rapidly evolving, and requires well trained, educated, and invested individuals to keep pace with it.  Most high school students, however, have very limited exposure to these technical subjects.

Careers in the STEM fields
Students who study the STEM subjects go on to pursue scientific and technical careers across dozens of different disciplines.  To learn more about these disciplines, follow the links below to the Sloan Career Cornerstone Center, a comprehensive resource for students and professionals interested in study or careers in the STEM-related fields.

For detailed information on hundreds of STEM-related careers, visit O*Net Online, a database  for information on key attributes and characteristics of thousands of occupations.  Careers may be researched through a number of search options.
