About Disability
Services
Welcome to the Wentworth Disability Services
website.
On the following pages you will find a
comprehensive overview of services offered to
students with various disabilities. Although
the volume of information may seem daunting, the
intent is to supply students, families, and
educators with as much useful information as
possible. Please review the information and
then contact the Coordinator of Disability
Services (counseling@wit.edu)
if you have any additional questions or
concerns.
Wentworth Institute of Technology is
committed to providing support services that
allow students with disabilities to participate
fully in the life of the community. Wentworth
subscribes to the policies set forth in the
Americans with Disabilities Act
(ADA) and in
Section 504f the Federal Rehabilitation Act
of 1973, which mandate equal opportunity in
educational programs and activities for students
with disabilities. In general, the ADA defines
an individual with a disability as any
individual who "has a physical or mental
impairment which substantially limits one or
more major life activities of such individual;
has a record of such impairment; or is regarded
as having an impairment."
Students with physical, medical,
psychological, and learning disabilities are
eligible to utilize Disability Services to
arrange for reasonable accommodations such as
testing modifications and tutoring. Students are
also welcome to schedule ongoing meetings and to
utilize the Counseling Center for support,
assistance with advocacy, liaisons with faculty,
and other accommodations as needed.
Students with disabilities at Wentworth are
fully integrated into the community. There are
no separate class sections or special programs
for students with disabilities. As a relatively
small institution, Wentworth seeks to provide
individual attention, support, and reasonable
accommodations for individuals with
disabilities.
To receive services, an individual must
voluntarily disclose his or her disability,
provide documentation as required by the
institution, and request specific services.
Students are expected to request services in a
timely fashion and are strongly encouraged to
contact the institution at least six weeks prior
to the start of their academic career at
Wentworth. Documentation for learning
disabilities, including attention
deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD), should
include the results of a psycho-educational or
neuropsychological evaluation performed within
the last three years by a qualified
professional. It is customary that the
evaluation will also include recommendations for
accommodations as well as instructional and
study strategies. With the individual's
permission, information regarding the nature of
the disability and the kinds of accommodations
needed will be shared with the individual's
instructors and other persons who may need to be
involved in the provision of services.
