Counseling Center FAQ

Q: Who is eligible to use the Counseling Center services?
A:
Any Wentworth student who is currently enrolled may use the Counseling Center. Students who are not attending summer session classes but are returning in the fall are eligible for services. Students on co-op and in the Division of Continuing & Professional Education are also eligible.

Q: Do I have to pay?
A: There is no charge for visits to Counselors in the Counseling Center. There will be charges for referrals for psychological/psychopharmacological evaluations and for visits to outside therapists to whom a student may be referred. In many instances, some of these costs may be covered by the student’s health insurance.

Q: How do I know if I need counseling?
A: Counseling is appropriate for anyone who is troubled by a specific problem or has a general concern. Students seek out counseling for personal growth, increased self-awareness, academic concerns, career indecision, depression, family and interpersonal issues, as well as for acute problems or crises.

Q:  What hours is the Counseling Center open?
A: The Counseling Center is open from 8:15a.m. to 4:45p.m. Monday through Friday, except for Institute-observed holidays. Evening appointments can be arranged if needed.

Q:  Will my contact with the Counseling Center be confidential?
A: The information shared in counseling sessions is confidential and will not be disclosed to any person or organization outside the Counseling Center without your consent, unless it is to protect you or someone else from imminent harm or unless it is mandated under Massachusetts State Law.

Q:  What if I feel suicidal or feel as if I can’t cope?
A: Please call the Counseling Center immediately and ask to speak with a Counselor. If you feel suicidal or in crisis, and the Center is not open, call Wentworth Public Safety at (617) 989-4444. Public Safety will contact the appropriate source of assistance. If you are off-campus and feeling suicidal please call 911 to be transported to a hospital.

Q:  If I decide to see a Counselor, what commitments would I be asked to make?
A: When you come for an initial session, you are not making a commitment beyond that one session. If it is agreed that you should continue in counseling, we expect you to keep your appointments and call in advance when you are unable to attend a session.

Q:  What can I do if I am concerned about a friend?
A: You can talk with a Counselor by phone or set up an appointment to discuss what is happening to your friend and what you might be able to do to help. If you think your friend is in a crisis, call the Counseling Center, Public Safety, or 911 immediately.
